Ingredients
- 4 pounds potatoes (Yukon gold or Russet (1.8kg))
- 1 tablespoon salt (plus more to taste)
- 4 peeled garlic cloves (optional)
- ½ cup unsalted butter ((113g))
- ¾ cup whole milk or cream ((180ml))
- Ground black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Begin by peeling the potatoes if you wish. Chop them into approximately 1-inch pieces and place them in a large pot.
- Fill the pot with enough water to cover the potatoes by an inch. Incorporate the salt and garlic cloves if you’re using them, then bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Cook for around 10 minutes or until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork.
- While the potatoes are boiling, mix the milk and butter in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes until the butter is fully melted. Remove from heat but keep it warm if the potatoes are not yet ready.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the warm pot. Turn the heat to low and gently stir them for a minute to eliminate any excess moisture. Take off the heat and mash the potatoes to your preferred texture using a potato masher or wooden spoon.
- Gradually pour in the warm milk mixture while gently combining it with the mashed potatoes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper according to your taste. Serve with additional butter and consider garnishing with cracked pepper, minced chives, or parsley if desired.
